A suspect from Oregon has been arrested and booked into jail following new evidence that links him to the murder of a six-year-old boy in 1987, according to officials. Fred Cain III, a resident of Central Point, faces charges of murder, sodomy, and kidnapping in connection with the crime. The Solano County District Attorney’s Office made the announcement of Cain’s arrest on September 18. The office revealed that cold case investigators recently re-evaluated an abduction case from 1987, where a young boy was taken from his home in Vallejo, California and later found dead in Sacramento County. The autopsy conducted at the time confirmed that the child had been sexually assaulted.
Initially, a suspect named Shawn Melton was charged with the kidnapping and murder. Although Melton possessed knowledge about the child’s death that only the killer would know, his case was dismissed due to a hung jury. However, advances in DNA technology have since exonerated Melton and identified another person responsible for the young child’s tragic death. The press release stated that Cain, the newly implicated suspect, was awaiting extradition to Solano County as of Friday.
Authorities have chosen not to disclose specific details about their findings in order to protect the integrity of their case. District Attorney Krishna Abrams expressed gratitude for the dedicated cold case investigators who have remained committed to solving such horrific cases, regardless of the passage of time. Anyone with information pertaining to the case is urged to contact 707-784-8477.
